Returning The Love With Rafael Nadal
Returning The Love With Rafael Nadal
The US Open has done a sensational job of ‘Returning the Love’ via their Ben Stiller video. I, however, feel that Rafael Nadal’s Armani commercial would be much better suited to post for this Labor Day weekend, because, well-why not? He’s given plenty back to charity and continues to ‘return the love’ even when scantily clad.
From the US OPEN:
- Nadal came through again, joining 30 kids from The Child Center of NY, a Queens-based organization that helps thousands of at-risk kids throughout the borough, in a 10 and Under Tennis clinic after the US Open draw ceremony. Despite rain pouring down right before the planned outdoor event on the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Rafa delighted every kid in the place with an impromptu hitting session inside SmashZone, the popular interactive fan attraction at the US Open.
For some of the kids, the first time they picked up a racquet was the same day they went one-on-one with Rafael Nadal.
“Thank you very much,” Nadal said to the children as they lined up to hit, smiling as he swatted a few trick shots over the net with the foam balls designed for the QuickStart play format.
“Good job by all you guys. You should be very proud.”
Have a save and happy holiday weekend kids.

DEL POTRO UPSETS ROGER FEDERER
DEL POTRO UPSETS ROGER FEDERER

“I believed in myself but now I can’t believe this has happened to me. I wanted this tournament so bad, for so many years.” Juan Martin Del Potro after winning the U.S. Open
I don’t even know where to start with this one…but how about the headlines: Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina celebrates after defeating Roger Federer of Switzerland in the Men’s Singles final on day fifteen of the 2009 U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 14, 2009 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. Del Potro defeated Federer 3-6, 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
Going into the Final, most assumed Roger Federer would win. Including R-Fed himself…not to sound redundant or anything, but this is his pattern. I’m not gonna go on a rant about how he expects to win just because everyone says he will, once again, you gotta practice and you can never underestimate your opponent. In this case, a 6’6” stud from Argentina.
“I don’t know what to say about this,” del Potro said. “It is the most amazing thing, it is the most crazy feeling to have…of course when I came closer to winning the match I knew my dream was coming nearer and I was nervous. But I believed I could do it because I have played very good tennis at this tournament and I just focused on continuing like that.”
Del Porto is beautiful in every sense of the word…beautiful because when he won, the last thing on his mind was the $1.8M purse…I know I’m not the only one who thinks sportscaster Dick Enberg needs to apologize to Del Potro. As Dick was explaining the spoils of his victory to him, precious Potro repeatedly asked Dick if he could say something in Spanish…Dick ignored him- instead focusing in on the prizes…eventually, Del Potro asserted himself and was able to say what he wanted with tears in his eyes. A beautiful moment for Del Potro, and a major career tarnisher for Enberg. The favoritism given to Federer was also nauseating…just read the body language in the above photo. Nough said?
I’m not quite sure what it was that Del Potro said in his native tongue, but according to my ears it was something along the lines of: “I try for so long to make a date with this crazy red-headed blogger, now I feel prepared she will say yes, no? As I give her the greatest gift a man could-the US Open trophy I earned from Federer…”
“This one is easy to get over just because I’ve had the most amazing summer and a great run,” Federer said. Oh, have fun getting over it Roger Federer but judging by the look on her face last night, I’m not too sure Smirka feels the same way.
Congratulations to all 6’6” of gorgeousness named Juan Martin Del Potro. You won with class, eloquence and skill. We see you now~

Arthur Ashe Kids Day with Will Ferrell
Arthur Ashe Kids Day with Will Ferrell

Will Ferrell is at it again…the philanthropic funnyman joined tennis players Andy Roddick, James Blake, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Roger Federer and others for the annual Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
The fan-friendly event, which was founded 14 years ago, featured a performance from Jordin Sparks and some humorous antics on the court including a mixed doubles match featuring Kim Clijsters and James Blake taking on Ana Ivanovic and Devin Britton with Will Ferrell calling the shots as the chair umpire- dressed as Blake, wearing a headband and bald wig. Priceless. Simply priceless.
Later…Ferrell, Roddick, Williams, Sharapova and Federer participated in a target-hitting contest to raise money for their respective charities…by the end of the contest, a total of $67,000 was raised, with $10,000 benefiting the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network…the NJTL was established in 1969 by Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder to develop the character of children through tennis and education…looks like they’re doing one hell of a job too. Video highlight of the event on YouTube.

Rafael Nadal Heats Up Vogue Magazine
Rafael Nadal Heats Up Vogue Magazine

“I’m not very brave about anything in life. In tennis, yes. In everything else, not very.” Rafael Nadal, Vogue magazine, June 2009
It was less than a month ago that our Spanish delicacy, Rafael Nadal, landed in Time magazine as one of their most ‘influential’ Heroes & Icons…now, Rafa has made his way into the June issue of Vogue magazine, where journalist Gaby Wood penned a great interview and famed photographer Bruce Webber snapped some mouthwatering images of our beast during the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Gaby’s article is fantastic, perhaps one of the best I’ve read in relation to Rafa. She captures his essence and persona perfectly while giving us a glance of Rafa’s closely guarded inner circle…and she definitely knows how to capture the reader’s attention and libido: “…I make my way over to the practice court,” she writes, “Rafa is shirtless, sweat streaming down his front, the deep thwacking sound of his inhuman forehand filling everyone’s ears…”
We learn that our Tapa enjoys fishing, golfing, going to the movies, and spending time with his girlfriend. We learn that the humble words he speaks transcend the court- opting to fly commercial instead of using private jets…and he speaks highly of nemesis Roger Federer, “He’s one of the greatest tennis players in history, if not the greatest. But the thing that makes you improve isn’t any individual—it’s the demands of the sport itself.”
Gaby also asked Rafael how he felt when he saw Federer crying in Australia. “Well, a bit odd, no? I didn’t really know what to do. I felt sad for him. Those are difficult moments when you’re living through them, but over the years they become moments that both he and I will be able to look back on fondly—they’re emotional moments.”
I had my own emotional moment as I read about his pre-match rituals: “He’ll sleep between seven and nine hours, then have a plate of pasta for breakfast…just beforehand, he always has a (gulp) cold shower; then his physio, Rafael Maymo, helps him put on all his tape…”
But perhaps the most enlightening thing we learn about Rafa is that he’s in dire need of a visit from Delinda: “Being home alone at night makes me a bit nervous. If I’m at home alone I have to sleep on the sofa—I can’t face going to bed. I’m there with the TV on and all the lights on…”
Rafa also speaks of his new foundation, which aims to educate underprivileged children all over the world. “I’d like to help people who don’t have enough to live on,” he says, “I’d like to help everyone I can.”
I don’t know about the rest of ya, but Rafa has certainly helped me decide where I’m spending my summer vacation. Vamos our little ‘Rafalet’, va-mos.

Roger Federer Doesn’t Care Anymore
Roger Federer Doesn’t Care Anymore

Roger Federer’s tantrum at the Sony Ericsson Open has left me aghast. In case you missed it, the Swiss Mister smashed his racquet while losing to Novak Djokovic during the men’s semifinal of the Sony Ericsson Open on April 3, 2009.
Granted, had Federer simply lost instead of acting like a child, I’d be well over it, but I gotta get this off my chest…. On March 25, the ATP announced the recipients of their “awards” prior to the start of the Open. For the fifth consecutive year, Roger Federer won the ATP World Tour’s Stefan Edberg sportsmanship award.
Other-more appropriate awards included our Spanish delicacy, top-ranked Rafael Nadal chosen as player of the year, while James Blake nabbed the Arthur Ashe humanitarian of the year award for his charitable efforts. (More on that in another post.)
Interesting, no? Ten days after receiving his fifth “sportsmanship” award, Federer decides to throw a tantrum because he was outplayed? This would be like James Blake going out and kicking a homeless person after winning his humanitarian award. Come on ATP, can we please stop kissing R-Fed’s Nike laced ass.
“It is great to receive two more awards,” Federer said. “It is always important for me to be a good sportsman on the court and give the right example for others to follow and hopefully inspire the next generation. It also means the world to me to be the fans’ favorite player for the sixth year in a row.”
What is it, arrogance? A cultural difference? A sense of entitlement? I’m confused. Sure, I’ve met R-Fed before, and yes, he was sweet as a button- there’s an undeniable charm to R-Fed. He is a ‘nice guy. But a sportsman award? I think not.
How did he win this? Why did he win this? Because he wears blazers, he’s automatically a ‘gentleman’? Classy sportsmen don’t smash their rackets like a two-year-old having a tantrum because the “wind” carried his ball out-a-bounds. And let’s please remember his loss to Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open earlier this year. Instead of graciously stepping aside and allowing Rafa to enjoy his spoils, Federer broke down in tears and hijacked Rafa’s moment. Sportsman-like conduct? Not in my book.
And I bet anyone it’s just a matter of time before the ‘baby’ is blamed for his lackluster performances. Federer excitedly announced his news last month: “It’s not going to really disturb my mindset on tennis a whole lot.” Really? You can’t even play in the wind Roger, what kind of distraction is a courtside Mirka and mini-me going to cause?
The hypocrisy that is Roger Federer even comes via his words: “Thank God the hardcourt season is over,” he said. “It’s the end of the hardcourt season. I don’t care anymore. I’m moving over to clay, a new chapter.” Um, new chapter? You mean playing on your least favorite surface-red dirt? The one on which you have been the least successful? Good luck Roger, we’ll be seeing ya in ‘He Lost It Hall of Fame.’

Celebrity Athletes in 2008
Celebrity Athletes in 2008
2008 has been a great year for some of our favorites. Yes, I made a vow to take the month off but unfortunate I can’t stay away…too many of our guys are out there playing Santa, making cookies with kids and spreading the holiday cheer…I couldn’t possibly cover all the action, just a few memorable moments that made my estrogen spike and my man question my sanity…

Rafa is sitting tight at number one after sending the Swiss Mister down the rankings ladder and finally clinching his spot atop the world rankings…Our kitten Camilo Villegas grabbed a few headlines, several trophies and a shit load of estrogen en route to 2009…Lewis Hamilton became the youngest champion in Formula One history and owned the word “class” while kicking ass in the face of racism…we fell in love with Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt while raising awareness for genocide…Men’s USA Basketball did us proud and brought home the gold…and we, the people, elected one of the hottest ballers alive to be Our President. All in all, I would say a mighty good year.

Ideally, I would elaborate on Carmelo Anthony’s ‘Very Melo Holiday Event’ which was held in Denver…however, I am at a loss for words. Only one comes to mind…Geez-Us. Carmelo Cares people and don’t ever doubt it. “It’s important to me to make a significant impact on the communities that have positively affected me. My family and I are committed to growing my Foundation so that we can continue to help families in need.”

Another Nugget up to do-gooding…Chauncey Billups, along with Ray and Rodney Billups-spread some holiday cheer during a holiday event for families at the Hiawatha Davis Rec Center in Denver.

Shane Battier gets mad props for helping this little kid from Casa De Esperanza pick out some toys during the Houston Rockets Season of Giving in Houston…and gotta give a massive hug to the most underrated ‘giver’ in the League-Ron Artest…Ron-Ron made cookies during the Rockets event and passed out gifts along with Luther Head, Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey…

And this is the fifth year in a row that the NBA has teamed up with ‘Feed the Children’… This years event in Detroit saw five Pistons Kwame Brown, Allen Iverson, Jason Maxiell, Tayshaun Prince and Rasheed Wallace stepping in as the Fab-Five for this years ‘Miracle in Motown’ where they fed five thousand families…For me, the Pistons embody something that transcends basketball. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any controversy, jail time or scandal involving the Motown boys that would deem them unworthy of praise, so correct me if I’m wrong-until then, they get my vote for sincerity, good will and never saying no when asked to help others.
Have a safe and happy holiday season…remember to check out all the celebrity philanthropy we’re covering at Look to the Stars…have a rocking new year, hug a child and I’ll see ya in (yikes) ’09.

Tattoos, Obama, Land Mines, Dry Ice, A Very Sad Swiss Mister and a Naked Tapa?
Tattoos, Obama, Land Mines, Dry Ice, A Very Sad Swiss Mister and a Naked Tapa?

My libido is clashing with my goal to write about charity stuff…so I defer to my hormones…yes, I am still crushing hard on Obama…and I’m loving the support our sexy new Prez is getting from some of our balling babes…Wizards beast Gilbert Arenas got some cool ink on his digits…talk about creating a ‘let-your-fingers-do-the-walking’ fantasy (post-manicure pa-leeze!)…but perhaps my favorite tribute (to date) comes from Sweet Melon who’s got my marshMelo’s standing at full attention. Not sure what he said because he keeps licking his lips and distracting me…
Despite the dry ice and on court massage, Roger Federer could not get by Andy Murray. Day six of the ATP Masters Cup in Shanghai…Murray won the match 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 to eliminate Federer from the tournament…seriously; I am starting to feel kinda bad for the Swiss Mister…
I, for one, would think twice about attending the Baltic Arena soccer stadium in Poland…the stadium is being built for the Euro 2012 Cup but prior to any building being done, they sent out a gaggle of “sappers’ from an explosives company to test the ground for any remaining World War II explosives…And to everyone in Poland who didn’t think this was funny, I meant no disrespect. Trust me, even if they did NOT send in the “sappers” I would still attend a Euro Cup match in the stadium!

Enjoy the weekend…maybe go for a sail? While I’m not one to run photos of our hotties naked, I cant help but post this one of Rafael Nadal ala natural…vamos indeed.

Federer Bears the Brunt of James Blake’s Booty
Federer Bears the Brunt of James Blake’s Booty

“I’ve lost to Roger, I don’t even know how many times — 8, 9, 10, 50 times, I don’t know — but I didn’t feel like there was a definite advantage going into tonight,” James Blake said. “Anything can happen. And when I’m playing well I can hopefully play with the best in the world, and I do believe I proved that tonight.”

Indeed. Blake defeated Federer 6-4, 7-6 (2). The last singles match Roger Federer has played as the No.1 men’s tennis player in the world, ended in a booty-licious loss to James Blake today. “If you play him enough times, he’s bound to have an off day,” the number 8-seeded Blake said. “I proved that I played with the best tonight, and it couldn’t have happened to me on a better stage,” Blake said. “Maybe the law of averages, if I play him enough, he’s bound to have an off day against me once,”

“I can’t be more elated that it happened at the Olympics…In a lot of the other matches, it has been a point here or there,” Blake said. “That’s why he was No. 1 in the world—he played those points better than everyone. Today I played them well.”
Federer, on his way out, did not speak to reporters…“I’m disappointed,” he said as he walked past.
And I promise not to gloat too much…

Rafael Nadal Worlds Number One?
RAFA and ROLIING INTO FIRST PLACE?

The tennis gods have opened their big, beautiful, tan, muscular arms and ushered our edible little tapa into the world’s number one spot, unofficially, but I’m still gonna declare August 1 a holiday. Rafa Day…Our baby ripped it like a Spanish warrior from the hands of a more than one opponent to climb over a Swiss Ego and land on both feet with class and humility, no?

Granted, Rafael Nadal’s official-official number one ranking wont be ‘acknowledged’ until he wins the tournament, Sunday, but even if he doesn’t, he has enough points in Cincinnati to overtake Roger Federer when the rankings are released on Aug. 18. “Yeah, very tough match” he panted after downing Nicolas Lapentti 7-6, 6-1 on Friday, “I was little bit tired…the weather here is very hot…important for me into semifinals, very, very happy…happy because I fight it a lot the last three years to be number one, but for sure be number one is always a goal, no?”

We have a new worlds number one, Rafael Nadal. Oh how I’ve waited to hear those words outside of my dreams…Rafa said he would wait until “after Davis Cup for party.” However, after sitting in second place for 158 straight weeks on the ATP World rankings, I hope he’s chugging down a few glasses of Sangria with his lady…after all, its not everyday you dethrone a man who was on a 235 week run. I will refrain from sending condolences to Roger Federer or making any kind of comments like Rafa deserves it because he trained harder, remained focused, and wasn’t busy texting his celeb-pals between sets in order to make sure they were watching him play. But I do hear Roger Federer will be carrying the Swiss flag at next Friday’s Olympic Games opening ceremony in Beijing-so that’s good, right? And it coincides with his 27th birthday, so I’m sure he’ll be just fine…
Congratulations Rafa for becoming the 24th player in the history of the ATP Rankings to hold the number one position and the third Spaniard to accomplish the feat, joining Carlos Moya (1999) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2003).

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer Off Court Battle
NEW BATTLE FOR NADAL AND R-FED?

On July 6 Rafael Nadal dethroned Roger Federer as the king of Wimbledon. It’s considered one of the greatest matches of all time, and yes, we’re still talking about it. Why? Because it just takes one asinine member of the media to mention the word ‘doping’ in the same sentence as Wimbledon and we got a new scandal. And boy am I pissed. I’m willing to bet a million bucks (which I don’t have) that if Roger Federer had won his sixth title, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. But because it’s the buffer, leaner, stronger, more disciplined player who won-he must have been cheating…and a dirty Spaniard? Wimbledon? Oh I can hear the conservative British panties bunching from here.

I hadn’t even entertained the thought of either Nadal or Federer ‘doping’ until I read the aforementioned article. It makes me sick to even address this issue, but its important because I suspect its gonna be the subject of debate for years to come. What really set me off was a phone call I got from a friend.
“Ya know your boys juicing, right,” he said.
“Huh, who? What?” Ian Poulter- juicing- I thought to myself?
“Nadal, Wimbledon” he corrected me, “I know people on the tour, he’s juicing,” he said again.
I could literally feel my blood slowly start to boil. (Good rumors always start off with an I-have-a-friend-admonition. Anyone remember the Richard Gere ‘gerbil’ stories from the late 80’s? Didn’t everyone have a “friend” that ‘worked in the hospital Gere was brought to?’)
Anyway…my anger, I realize now, came from a place where steroids didn’t exist. Not for one nano-second did it enter my mind that either one of the worlds top two tennis players were taking some sort of performance enhancing drugs. The glorious high I felt from Rafa’s stunning victory was deflated with one single careless accusation.

We were given a gold-plated diversion from the usual world of sports- a great rivalry between two outstanding athletes-unspoiled or tainted by such distractions as China, Darfur, foreclosures, DUI’s, rapes, murders, home-invasions, cheating, strippers, weed, smog, traffic, earthquakes, tsunamis-whatever- it was pure. It was real and it was beautiful. How dare uninformed, misguided naysayers take away the one game that made us feel something other than disgust with our athletes.

Is the basis for this rumor planted in Nadal’s Spanish blood? Racism perhaps? Ignorance maybe? Its not like Nadal suddenly appeared out of thin air-for god’s sake, when he was 15-years old (2002) he won his first ATP match. Don’t think Federer won a match before his 16th birthday? By the following year, Rafa had become the second-youngest player in the top 100. And has everyone forgotten that Nadal was only 17 when he made his Wimbledon debut?

And are we forgetting that while Nadal was busting his ass practicing, Federer was busy texting with his new celebrity buddies like Tiger Woods? Are we ignoring the 81-consecutive clay-court match winning streak Nadal had while R-Fed was busy filming his Gillette commercial? My point isn’t to rip on Roger Federer because “they” are speculating that he “may have been” doping as well. If you know anything about the man, you know this is absurd. My point is that just because we live in a ‘steroids era’ doesn’t mean all victories are won at the hands of cheaters.
I’m not feigning ignorance to the fact that some tennis babes may have dabbled in the juice…but I highly doubt either Nadal and Federer would need to tap into anything other than their natural talents to give us a spine-tingling, mind-numbing, double-de-licious piece of history. So keep your rumors to yourselves people- because unless Nadal and Federer stand in front of me, pee in a cup and test dirty-I aint buying into this ridiculous buzz kill and baseless rumor for one second.

As always, thanks for reading. Delinda Lombardo

Rafael Nadal Stops Roger Federer To Create His Own Spot in Wimbledon History
LIGHTENING ROD O’ RAFA: 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7.

Could you hear me screaming? No doubt my Rafa-induced shrills of joy traveled all the way across the Pacific Ocean…my hands are blistered, my voice is gone and I may have suffered a minor coronary during the Wimbledon Men’s Final. Mother Nature was an evil, evil woman, stopping play more than once while she opened her arms to sprinkle rain on what could-be one of the best matches in history. Between the break points, rains delays, sudden deaths, match points, 18 cups of coffee I drank, 6 tranquilizers I swallowed and Rafa’s grunting, I don’t think I could have survived the night had they halted play due to weather or nightfall.

Prior to the Wimbledon, Roger Federer said: “I don’t think it matters really a lot if I’m the favorite or not,” Federer said. “I’m on an incredible winning streak on grass. First, somebody has to be able to break that before we start talking differently.” Okay, let’s start ‘talking differently’ now shall we?

The skies opened up over Wimbledon as our Lighten Rod ‘O Rafa wiped that smarmy smirk off the face of the Swiss Mister to win the Men’s Final at the All England Tennis Club. Nadal’s sexy Spanish prowess, precise rituals, and tantalizing on-court backhanded-gymnastics were nothing short of spectacular, and after losing the last two Wimbledon Finals to the Swiss Mister, it was beyond sensational to watch our precious Spaniard lift that trophy, kiss it, nibble on it and rejoice in a long overdue historical-stoppage of R-Fed’s oh-so-wonderful winning streak of five-Wimbledon titles.

Rafa was asked how he felt the moment he won: “Is impossible to explain what I feet in that moment,” he said, “Just very, very happy to win this tournement.” Even John McEnroe was blown away, “It’s the greatest match I’ve ever seen in my tennis career,” he said more than once during his post-match interview with Rafa. “Unbelievable effort, unbelievable,” said McEnroe, “It was the greatest match I have seen in my tennis career, how in the world did you do that?” Rafa replied with his natural humility, “I don’t know, I was crying like ten minutes because for Rafa is like dream for Wimbledon,” he said, “For the Spanish, Wimbledon always is very, very difficult…I try to be very concentrate…belief in the victory all the time and be more focused.” And with that, our Rafael Nadal becomes the first man to win Wimbledon and French Open in the same year since 1980…the rest, as they say, is history.

As always, thanks for reading.

Magic Johnson Honored with USA Today’s Hollywood Hero Award, Carlos Boozer Gets Overstocked, Kevin Costner Helps University of Oregon, Francesco Totti and Federer, iSport Magazine, Tommy Robredo, Payless to Pay More Than $300M to Adidas, Carmelo Anthony Foundation Work, European Soccer Babes Mandated to Speak English?
WHERE MAGIC HAPPENS
Magic Johnson founded the Magic Johnson Foundation in 1991 to raise funds for community-based organizations dealing with HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs. His foundation has already awarded more than $1.1 million in funds…He also established 21 Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Centers, four HIV/AIDS clinics and has co-created the award-winning “I Stand With Magic” campaign to end HIV/AIDS in the black community…so its no surprise that on Tuesday night, Magic was awarded USA Today’s Hollywood Hero Award for his work with the Magic Johnson Foundation.

This lucky girl was privy to the event where friends of Magic turned up in throngs to honor him at the award ceremony held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Russell Simmons was frolicking around the hotel, for hours, with his cell phone glued to his head before walking the red carpet and giving an incredibly touching speech, “The inspiration and knowledge you give goes way beyond what people see. You are truly an inspirational image in this country and the world,” said Simmons…Paul Sorvino graced the event and had nothing but love for Magic, “He’s Magic Johnson, he gives back so much, how could I not be here.” One of my all time favorites, Samuel L Jackson, was in da house- wearing a velvet blazer that attracted me like a moth to the flame. Sammy didn’t seem to mind as I caressed his arm and spoke to him about golf- his PR girl wasn’t too happy, but the big guy was happy to oblige my minor molestation.

Other notables included Phil Jackson and Jeanie Buss-with her cute Lakers purse. (And for all you ‘Dog Whisperer’ lovers, Jeanie informed me that Princess is doing much better since their visit from Cesar Millan and appearance on the show, “He spent way more time with me than with Princess, working to help me be the alpha-dog, but we’re doing much better.” Also must make mention that I asked both Phil Jackson and Magic Johnson if they had anything to do with Lakers game two being moved from the night of the Event, to the following evening…they both chuckled and denied any involvement.) Guests gave tribute to Magic via goose-bump producing speeches. When Chaka Kahn said, “I want to thank you for loving mankind,” I shed my first tear…the next came during Regina Kings speech, “It’s about you inspiring us to be better, to want to be better, and I thank you so much for being you, I appreciate you.” Needless to say, when Magic gave his speech, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Much thanks to USA TODAY, NMA Entertainment and Marketing for an awesome event, and for allowing me to attend. Please visit Look to the Stars for my complete write-up.
AN ‘OVERSTOCKED’ CARLOS BOOZER
Finally, a reason to write about Carlos Boozer! The sexy Utah Jazz All-Star has teamed up with Overstock.com for a four-year agreement that includes Boozer making appearances on behalf of Overstock.com. Sounds a bit odd, but Overstock is based in Utah, as is Boozers Foundation, Boozer’s Buddies- a non profit organization that supports the research and treatment of Sickle Cell Anemia…Boozers son suffers from the disease, so props to Overstock for giving Boozers Buddies a boost. “Carlos and Cindy share the same values and ideals as Overstock.com,
and their commitment to these values is admirably demonstrated by their charitable organization…This will highlight that Utah is home to Overstock.com, Carlos, and Boozer’s Buddies. Together we can help a lot of people in the years to come,” said Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne.
CRAVING SOME MARSH MELO TODAY

All you naysayers jumping on the Melo-bashing wagon, step back. Carmelo Anthony has named Maroon PR to oversee the growth and outreach surrounding the Carmelo Anthony Foundation. According to the Rocky Mountain News, one of Melo’s top priorities is finding corporate supporters because he’s been making most of the financial contributions himself. Public filings indicate that in 2006, Melo opened his wallet and gave about $1M to the foundation. Documents show that Baltimore-based groups have received most of the Foundation money, as the CAF donated $175,000 to the Living Classrooms Foundation, $100,000 to basketball program Charm City Choice, $2,400 to the Kurk Lee Foundation and Denver-based Team Up For Kids received $30,000 from the CAF. The CAF “aims to help children” in Denver, Baltimore and Syracuse…like I said, back off on Melo people, he ain’t that bad.
I KNOW HE’S NOT AN ATHLETE…BUT

Kevin Costner and his band, Modern West, will perform two fundraising concerts in Eugene, Oregon, to help the Univ. of Oregon raise money for a new baseball stadium…Costner will strut his stuff on May 30 and 31…you may recall that I recently caught KC’s after party show at Celebrity Fight Night-which is why I recommend checking out this show-granted, you’re not gonna walk away from his performance thinking “Grammy” but you will thoroughly enjoy the concert while helping the University get a new stadium.
FORTY LOVE

Andy, Andy, Andy…what am I gonna do with you? Sir Andy Roddick took part in a little tennis clinic with some very lucky kids at the ATP Masters Series in Rome…and that’s about all the info available on the subject.

Because really, its hard to read their body language…Under new U.K. immigration rules, soccer players from outside the European Union (EU) “will be barred from joining” the English Premier League “unless they can speak simple English.” The government originally had planned to “insist that they understood English up to [a secondary school] level but this was changed (phew) amid fears that it would rule out too many players.” The new stipulations state workers need to demonstrate an “ability to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases, to introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about basic personal details.” U.K. Immigration Minister Liam Byrne: “Footballers earn enough money to pay for professional tuition.” (Timesonline.co.uk)
OH NO

Francesco Totti arrived in a pair of white pants (that were way too small for him) to watch the Swiss Mister in action at the Rome Masters. Totti inadvertently created a stir as kids rushed him for autographs while ignoring Federer play. “I’m glad he was able to come,” said Federer. Looks like my Totti is tainted…
THE $304.6M SHOES

A U.S. District Court jury in Portland Monday ordered Payless Shoes to pay $304.6M for “infringing on Adidas America Inc.’s three-stripe trademark and shoe styles,” according to Brent Hunsberger of the Portland OREGONIAN. The jury, after a 14-day trial and two days of deliberation, awarded adidas AG’s U.S. subsidiary $30.6M in actual damages, $137M in punitive damages and $137M in Payless profits. Trademark attorneys believe it to be the largest award ever in a trademark-infringement case, and if the decision stands, it could have implications for retailers beyond the shoe business…like all those kiosks in the malls that sell fake Fendi’s and Prada’s perhaps?

Nadal Makes History With Win Over Roger Federer, Lewis Hamilton Places Third, Heikki Kovalainen Crashes.
NADAL: INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS

The Masters Series Monte Carlo…”I think I am more adapted to clay every match, no? I am feel I play more clay style every day, no?” Going for his 24th career title, our Spanish treat, Rafael Nadal, can’t make much cuter, no? Rafa worked the clay against Roger Federer and became the first player in Open Era history to capture the event four times in a row. The allegedly ‘neutral’ crowd was most def backing up the Swiss Mister. But Rafa’s supreme ball control-especially on clay- was too much for Federer-and in fabulous fashion, Rafa downed the worlds number one in straight sets and rolled around on that wonderful red-clay in celebration.

“I think I am playing well; I am doing good work,” purred Nadal, “I think I am more adapted to clay every match. I play more clay (court) style every day, having control of the point with the forehand.” Guess Federer needs to take a good, hard look at what he’s doing wrong…or simply stick to grass.

”I am the first fourth in a row? So, well, happy for that. That most important, happy for still playing good, no, for continuing playing good. Having last two Masters Series, two finals, the first semifinals, and the first Grand Slam semifinals, too. So I think is a very good start of the 2008 season. Just I have to continuing like this, no? I think I am playing well. I am doing good work. If I continue like this, I gonna have chances for being in the top positions another time, no?”
SPANISH F1

First place at the Spanish Grand Prix went to Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, second place was taken by Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, and third place was claimed by Lewis Hamilton (McLaren Mercedes)…I can not, with a clear conscience, say that Raikkonen looks nearly as good as the other babes when he downs champagne, but props to him for the win…

Finnish McLaren-Mercedes Formula One driver Heikki Kovalainen didn’t have a good day. After crashing during the event, he was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in good condition. “As far as we know he hasn’t broken anything. He’s a little concussed,” said McLaren boss Ron Dennis. “We think it was [caused by] a stone [getting caught] between the wheel rim and suspension. It shows a catastrophic air loss and we’ll know more when we get the bits back.” An on-board camera captured Kovalainen’s left-front tire suddenly deflate in the middle of the right-handed Campsa corner, one of F1’s most difficult. Initially there were serious concerns because the cockpit of the car was buried under a barrier and it took F1’s medical team 10 minutes to get him outta the wreckage.

Hamilton said he had been told during the race that his teammate was not badly injured. “It was a terrible day for Heikki, I am just so happy that he was not badly injured. I came past the corner and saw a red car in the wall, but did not know if it was a Ferrari or a McLaren. It reminded me of a similar situation last year, when the same thing happened to me.” The beast said he was glad to be back on the podium, after having failed to finish in the top three in the last two races. “After qualifying fifth, I knew it would be difficult, so I am glad to have finished third,” he said.

Nadal, Blake, Federer: Day 7 Down Under; Marin Cilic Talks to the Animals; Scott Macartney Crashes; Francis Joyon Round the World in 58 Days
DOWN UNDER

Gotta give love to our tennis babes for making this years Australian Open wonderfully sporntastic. Spanish treat Rafael Nadal advanced to the quarterfinals after Paul-Henri Mathieu retired with a bum ankle. Sounding a bit Feder-like, our tapa commented on his wicked play, “I was playing well today, maybe I was playing my best tennis in Australia this year,” purred the beast, “I’m happy to be in the quarterfinals—would have preferred not like this—but in the quarterfinals anyway.”

Janko Tipsarevic gets mad-props for delivering a stunning 4-hour, 27-minute performance against the Swiss Mister Roger Federer. Tipsarevic was ‘this’ close to sending Federer packing, but in the end, the world’s number one walked away victorious 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 5-7, 6-1, 10-8. “I’m happy I could deliver a five-set thriller. It was good to be part of something like this,” said Federer, chasing his third consecutive Australian title and 13th major. But I think Tipsarevic deserves the most love for “being part of something like this.” After watching him play, I was stunned to learn he’s only ranked 48th in the world. Dude put up one hell of a battle and I adore him.

The biggest story by far, is that of James Blake. His five-set, third round Saturday win over Sebastian Grosjean was nothing short of spectacular. “That’s got to be my biggest comeback—down two sets to love, two sets to one, two breaks against a guy that was getting a lot of free points on his serve,” Blake said. “Four-1 in the breaker, 5-3 in the breaker … it just seemed like every time there was a mountain to climb…I don’t think a lot of people like my chances, but I always do. No matter what my body language says—I know I’ve been criticized about that in the past—but that’s a little bit of the perfectionist in me.” Blake and that beautiful bouncing booty now face Marin Cilic in the fourth round.

I don’t know who’s cuter…Marin Cilic, Timmy the tree kangaroo, or Mallo the koala…I just wanna squeeze them all.
CRASH AND BURN
Scott Macartney of the United States crashed during the men’s World Cup downhill in Kitzbuehel, January 19. The 30-year-old from Crystal Mountain crashed at full speed (140 km/h) in the final jump of the downhill, fell on his back, lost his helmet, and amazingly enough, suffered no broken bones. “According to the U.S. ski team coaches, Scott Macartney is awake and feeling good,” organizers said on Sunday. Organizers added Macartney would stay under observation in hospital for a few days but a full recovery was expected.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 58 DAYS

French yachtsman Francis Joyon and his trimaran “IDEC” arrived in the Brittany port of Brest, France Sunday, January 20, 2008, after completing his nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe in 57 days, 13 hours, 34 minutes and 06 seconds. His solo journey obliterated the previous record held by Britain’s MacArthur who did it in 71 days and 14 hours.
