Andy Roddick To Host 2013 Celebrity Golf Tournament

The Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF) will host its inaugural celebrity golf tournament April 14-15, 2013 in Austin Texas. The tournament will take place at the Spanish Oaks Golf Club, lauded by Golf Digest as one of the top courses in Texas.

Roddick caddied for Zach Johnson during the Par 3 Contest prior to the 2011 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 6, 2011 in Augusta, Georgia, where he appeared to be…terrified? Granted Andy is king of making crazy faces but this one is priceless. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

Many of Roddick’s friends – professional athletes as well as entertainers – as well as other high profile personalities will participate in the event. “I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great performers and athletes over the years, and we’ve been able to support each others’ efforts to make a difference in our respective communities. I’m looking forward to many of them joining me in Austin for this first-ever event,” Roddick said. Continue reading

Camilo Villegas & Caddy for a Cure Make Fathers Day Special

At this week’s St Jude Fed-Ex Classic, most golf fans had their eyes on the players, while I, as usual, kept my eyes on the amazing Caddy for a Cure organization.

Caddy for a Cure offers the public the opportunity to experience a day “inside-the-ropes” at a PGA TOUR venue, caddying for a PGA TOUR player—with 100% of the proceeds going to charity.

hot athletes camilo villegas
During the event, Camilo Villegas’s caddy was part of the Caddy for a Cure program…Villegas is not new to the organization, but his latest involvement embodies what the organization is all about.

Mac McNeil is a young patient at St. Judes Hospital who is recovering from brain cancer …his father bought him a Caddy for a Cure experience and he escorted his Dad while he caddied for Villegas.

Caddy for a Cure: ‘Watching a father, and a son with brain cancer, enjoy the best that golf has to offer, with Camilo Villegas, is something very special. See the arm around the son as only a father can do, at this week’s St Jude Fed Ex Classic…there have been times in 10 years of ‘caddying for a cure’ that have choked us up.”

And for me, this is one of those rare moments in life where sports and humanity renew my faith in the power of love.

Thanks Camilo and Caddy for a Cure.

Zurich Charity Cup

Since 2005, Zurich and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans – together with the Fore!Kids Foundation – has raised more than $8 million for over 40 charities that serve more than 200,000 children in need throughout southeastern Louisiana.

This year, the Zurich Classic gave a total of $216,000 to several initiatives – all under the “Zurich HelpPoint Fore!Kids” theme — intended to help families and children of New Orleans.

This direct contribution from Zurich is in addition to the approximately $1 million that the Zurich Classic brings in each year for charities supported by the Fore!Kids Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation and the charitable-arm of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

But just because the event is over, doesn’t mean you can’t play, in fact, Zurich Golf Ambassadors are asking you to join them in the Zurich Charity Cup, a 9-week fan voting contest and social media-based competition among the seven Zurich Ambassadors. Continue reading

Els to Host Historic Charity Golf Event

Golf Hall of Famer, Ernie Els, is set to host the second annual Els for Autism Golf challenge, which has become the largest charity-driven, amateur golf tournament in history.

Backed by SAP, one of his top corporate sponsors, Els said: “SAP has taken over the golf challenge, so they’ve come in all guns blazing this year, and I think we’re going to have a wonderful time. I think we can double what we did last year.” Continue reading

Former President Clinton Saves Desert Golf

For 53 years, the ‘Bob Hope’ Desert Golf Classic has attracted a ton of celebrities and athletes to its yearly event held in Palm Springs. Over the years, however, its popularity has waned…maybe because ‘Bob Hope’ doesn’t hold the same appeal that ‘Justin Timberlake’ does, but I dare say, Timberlake may not have the appeal that Slick Willy does.

Thanks to the William J. Clinton Foundation, the desert golf classic is back on the map.

Clinton’s Foundation teamed with Louisville, Kentucky based health insurance provider Humana this year-adding their names to the ailing tournament and by all accounts, may have rescued the event. Continue reading

Gift Idea: Cancer for College

Gift Idea: Cancer for College

At the top of my list for ‘what-makes-Christmas awesome’ is Elf, to wit, Buddy The Elf. So this year, why not give someone the best gift ever-a copy of Buddy The Elf signed by Will Ferrell? In addition to the gift of Buddy, you are also gifting education to a cancer survivor.

Cancer for College is giving away a copy of Elf, autographed by Will Ferrell (aka Buddy The Elf) just in time for Christmas! All you gotta do is donate $25 bucks and you’re entered to win, and maybe, if Buddy has time, he might deliver it himself?

About Cancer for College:

Will Ferrell is a huge supporter of Cancer for College, a nonprofit organization that grants college scholarships to young adults who have survived cancer. While most teenagers are getting ready for prom and applying to college, many are undergoing chemotherapy treatments and surgeries to save their lives. Even with great health insurance, the cost of medications and co-pays can add up, leaving a cancer survivor with little or nothing to help pay for college once healthy.

Cancer for College was created to help alleviate the financial burden of cancer and to reward young people for beating the odds and pursuing their dreams of higher education.

The contest ends December 16, so click HERE to get started.

Seven Days in Utopia with Robert Duvall: Interview

Seven Days in Utopia with Robert Duvall: Interview

It’s nice to see a film that doesn’t have all the gratuitous sex and violence.”- Robert Duvall on playing Johnny Crawford

Brilliant interview with the great Robert Duvall as he chats with golf-blogger extraordinaire Tony Korologos from ‘Hooked On Golf Blog’ about his latest role in the film ‘Seven Days in Utopia.’ Duvall chats about golf, Tiger Woods, inspiration, sex, drugs, and claims that working with Billy Bob Thornton for an upcoming film was “one of the greatest moments of my career.”

SEVEN DAYS IN UTOPIA follows the story of Luke Chisolm (Lucas Black), a talented young golfer set on making the pro tour. When his first big shot turns out to be a very public disaster, Luke escapes the pressures of the game and finds himself unexpectedly stranded in Utopia, Texas, home to eccentric rancher Johnny Crawford (Robert Duvall). But Johnny’s more than meets the eye, and his profound ways of looking at life force Luke to question not only his past choices, but his direction for the future.

Based on David L. Cook’s best-selling book Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia, SEVEN DAYS IN UTOPIA also stars Melissa Leo, Deborah Ann Woll, Brian Geraghty, Jerry Ferrera, Joseph Lyle Taylor, KJ Choi and Kathy Baker. The film is directed by Matthew Dean Russell from a script by Cook, Rob Levine, Russell and Sandra Thrift. The film was produced by Mark G. Mathis (Brick, Precious) and Jason M. Berman (The Dry Land).

LPGA Supports ‘Caddy For A Cure’

LPGA Supports ‘Caddy For A Cure’

One of my favorite organizations, Caddy For A Cure, got some serious love from the LPGA during the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola in Portland last week.

‘Caddy For A Cure’ gives people a once in a lifetime experience of caddying for professional golfers while raising money for charity. The most recent event gave winners caddy-duties for three of the best from the LPGA: Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis and Natalie Gulbis.

‘Caddy For A Cure’ was founded by Russ Holden 18 years ago after his friends son Christian was born with Fanconi Anemia, a devastating genetic bone marrow disorder. Christian now serves as the National Spokesperson for the organization, and has been capturing hearts on the golf courses for years. In fact, Christian’s list of celebrity-golf buddies include: Boo Weekly, Camilo Villegas, Phil Mickleson, Jim Furyk, Ricky Fowler and many others

‘Caddy For A Cure’ has been such a success that it’s now giving fans a chance to ‘Roadie For A Cure’ with Shania Twain as the first artist to support the cause. Athlebrities has had both eyes on ‘Caddy For A Cure’ for years and couldn’t be happier at their continued success. Plus, Christian is about the best spokesperson in the world, with an endearing disposition and a wonderfully wicked sense of humor.

100% of the money raised by ‘Caddy For A Cure’ and ‘Roadie For A Cure’ goes to charity. Give ‘em some love.

Matt Bonner Spreads ‘Spurs Culture’ on the East Coast

Concord, New Hampshire, native and current vice president of the NBA Players Union, Matt Bonner, took a break from CBA talks today, to make an appearance at the Canterbury Woods Country Club, for the One For the Kids Golf Tournament, put on by the New Hampshire Chapter of Speedway Childrens Charities.

The Speedway Childrens Charities is dedicated to giving children the same opportunities no matter what they are facing. The SCC aligns itself with people, and organizations based on the local needs of every chapter through caring for children in educational, financial, social and medical needs. Bruton Smith, founder of SCC and Chairman of Speedway Motor Sports and Sonic Automotive started SCC in memory of his son Bruton Camerson Smith, who regrettably passed at a young age.

It’s so refreshing see larger organizations like the SCC using local talent to address local issues.

*Note: This report was filed by my new intern, Jessica Hernandez, who is awesome in so many way. Give her some love…after all, she did counter my ‘Does the NBA Really Care’ with a great example of NBA peeps spreading love during the lockout.

“Golf Boys” Video Helps Charity

PGA golfer Ben Crane-along with buddies- Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, & Hunter Mahan –have formed the PGA’s exclusive boy band, “Golf Boys.” Their debut single, “Oh Oh Oh” aired this week yet left me wondering why Ian Poulter-in his normal garb-wasn’t included. Regardless, you’ll enjoy our golf hotties doing their best Athlebrity moves while raising money for charity. Presenting sponsor Farmers Insurance will donate $1,000 to charitable initiatives chosen by Crane and the insurance company for every 100,000 views of the video. The Moses Project

The Moses Project

“I said back in 2000 that I was the world’s greatest athlete, and now I get the chance to try and prove it. I still love to compete. We’re going to have a lot of fun, and raise a lot of money for charity.” Ed Moses, stud.

Someone finally got it right. TV programming that is inspiring, heartfelt, thought provoking and void of egos…and the entertainment company giving it to us? Mojo Marketing & Media – the first and only of its kind whose underlying mission is to be an engine of awareness and encourage people to fully develop their personal social conscience, take action and get involved in making a positive difference.

The first show to come from the Mojo peeps is ‘The Moses Project.’ It features Olympic Gold Medalist and professional golfer Ed Moses as the sexy host and competitor for the new show that pits him against the hottest athletes and celebrities in different competitions each week…the kicker? All the money raised goes directly to charity…more than a million bucks to be exact.

The ‘Moses Project’ is just the first in a series of anticipated new programs from the company founded by Moses and Joy Stephenson. “There couldn’t be a better time than now for Mojo. But unlike other ‘feel-good’ fundraising projects that are oftentimes short-lived, Mojo is committed to ongoing efforts to benefit charities through innovative and engaging entertainment projects utilizing both mainstream and new media channels,” said company founder and president, Stephenson.

Mojo will produce original, compelling family-friendly content – including music, movies, sports, docudramas, concerts and reality-based content – that spreads the word about what organizations can do for communities and individuals and what communities and individuals can do for these organizations.

“Our first venture, ‘The Moses Project,’ is a great example of the entertaining and original work Mojo will produce,” said Moses, “As an athlete and Olympian who loves to compete, I can think of nothing more thrilling than putting it all on the line against other athletes and celebrities to benefit charity.”

More about our hot host Moses: The stud is an Olympic Champion, he won both gold and silver medals in swimming at the 2000 Sydney Olympics…he is a 13-time world record holder in swimming, the current world record holder in the 200 meter breaststroke, and a seven-time U.S. National Champion…he is also a professional golfer…he’s got a Bachelor of Arts degree in sports medicine from the University of Virginia…and, he is an active participant in events to raise funds and awareness for Ronald McDonald House, Mario Lemieux Foundation, Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation and the Joey Fatone Foundation…but wait, there’s more- he also teaches more than 10,000 kids and parents life skills and goal setting each year….and he served as the spokesperson for Caribbean Classic Golf Invitational from 2006 – 2008, a foundation which hosts an annual golf tournament in Jamaica to raise funds to place computer learning centers in Jamaica’s primary schools.

For more info please visit Mojo Marketing, The Moses Project Facebook Group, or The Real Moses: Ed’s Youtube channel where he’s got a great video-teaser of himself playing rooftop hoops with Michael Beasley.

I will have much, much more info available soon about Ed, the Moses Project and which of our athletes have accepted challenges from him. So stay tuned kids, I’m on top of this one.

Camilo Villegas Debuts New Clothing at the US Open

Camilo Villegas, Debuts New Clothing at the US Open

I’d like to start off by wishing Camilo Villegas a Happy Fathers day…no, he doesn’t have any kids (that I know of) but if he calls me soon we can change that by next year…in the meantime, I, along with half the worlds female population, have been actively enjoying our kitten while he tries to keep his paws (and chin) dry at the US Open.

Rain has wreaked havoc at the US Open, giving us excruciating delays in play but more than enough eye candy to keep us occupied. I have nothing deep to report here…no charity to write about…no scores or pars or eagles or birdies…just some straight-up gratuitous love for the hottest and sexiest male golfer alive, Camilo Villegas.

If you’ve been under a rock for the last five years, the sexy beast hails from Columbia and although most of the worlds press refers to him as Spiderman, I prefer to call him Our Kitten…and it seems our Kitten has added some fresh swagger to his crawl? The latest improvement on his ‘move’ includes the ‘balancing of his chin’ on the ground as he lines up his putt…dear god, can he get any cuter?

Camilo can sit on a fence and look adorable…he can suck the life outta a can of Red Bull or sign autographs while maintaining that oh-so-serious kiss-me now look on his face…

But aside from his limber, libido-tingling, yoga-like moves, Villegas has been dressed to impress…All week, he’s been sporting the new “J. Lindeberg Art Polo / Camilo Villegas Collection.” J. Lindeberg recently re-signed Villegas as their brand ambassador and extended their relationship by collaboratively developing this new line of sexy garb…

Needless to say, the marriage of Villegas and Lindeberg is what dreams are made of…the debut of Villegas’ new collection at the US Open has defiantly added some color, sex appeal and flair to the greens. But its also about character…and Villegas is one of the good-guys. While he is intensely focused during play, he always stops for the fans to sign autographs…he seems to have a solid grasp on what makes a man a ‘gentleman’, a golfer a ‘great player’ and an athlete a solid role model.

Meow my sexy feline, ME-OW.

Shaun Phillips and Charger Buddies Tee Off For Kids

Shaun Phillips and Charger Buddies Tee Off For Kids

Today, San Diego Charger Shaun Phillips was joined by his smoking hot teammates at the Maderas Golf Club in San Diego to host the inaugural Shaun Phillips Golf Tournament to benefit the San Diego After-School-All-Stars.

Phillips was recently named the spokesperson and sponsor of the event, and judging by the number of golfers and Chargers who showed up to lend their support, I’d say the San Diego After-School-All-Stars will make much more than a positive impact on the community.

But making a positive impact on me, were the amazing volunteers and dedication of Phillips to make this event a success. As I walked in, I quickly spotted the unmistakable strut of the Chargers in attendance, but was quickly sidetracked by the free tequila shots being given out by Atel Communications. (You gotta love the sponsors!) From there, I perused the auction items and dreamed of bidding on and winning the ‘Dinner with Shaun Phillips’ package…

The auction items were on display in preparation for the gala that night and without a doubt, and aside from dinner with Phillips and his abs, the best items up for auction were from artist Jorge Burtin. I recently wrote about Burtin and his ‘Pixaic’ mosaics in my ‘Art for Charity’ post (June 2). Burtin has been involved with a number of athletes and their charity work- specifically he donates 100% of the proceeds from the sale of his artwork to charity. His work and compassion for helping others is simply put, inspiring.

Also inspiring…were the Chargers themselves. Shaun Phillips was all smiles-and dimples-as he chatted with participants, red-headed bloggers, volunteers, kids and fellow Chargers (L-David Binn and Phillips, R-Matt Wilhelm)…he greeted each of his teammates with hugs, grins and handshakes and was genuinely eager to be hosting an event that provides after-school-programs for kids. “I was lucky, “ he said in a recent interview, “I had somewhere to go after-school and the help I got changed my life. It gave me direction, kept me out of trouble and helped me find the courage to reach my goals.” No doubt, Shaun’s goal has helped many kids in San Diego stay out of trouble. His support for the program is touching and sincere and I couldn’t think of a better spokesperson for them.

Phillips’ dedication to the organization goes beyond just hosting events, hot-stuff has pledged to donate $1,000 to the After-School-All-Stars for each sack he records during the season, last year he kicked down $8,500…next up, Phillips will be hosting his first ever dodge-ball tournament in November to benefit the program-and I hope to see you all there.

A big “thank you” to Shaun Phillips and all the sexy San Diego Chargers who lent their time and swagger to this wonderful event. If only we had more mighty-mighty-fine men like you guys looking out for the kids, then this world would truly be a better place.

Creating this line of sunscreen products allows us the ability to use Will’s image to promote the mission of our charity, raise some valuable funds to help send cancer survivors to college and increase cancer awareness.”

“We are obviously appealing to sun worshippers, streakers, art lovers and the ever growing market of body-building golfers,” said Ferrell. “We hope that everyone will see the humor in this product and join us in support of a very worthy cause…I’m proud to be associated with such a great charity. I’ve watched Craig and Cancer for College help hundreds of cancer survivors realize their dream of a college education. The stories are so inspirational. I’m just happy to help any way I can,” said Ferrell.

The humorous packaging of the must-have sunscreens were designed by BogeyPro founder Arik Norby, who was asked to create the artwork and catch-phrases by Pollard who’s a fan of Norby’s wicked sense of humor (as evidenced by the bottles) and involvement with Cancer for College.
