Yesterday, skate-god Tony Hawk, used Twitter to create a real-time treasure hunt which sent a good deal of his 2.9M followers scrambling to find hidden treasures before someone else did.

#THTH works like this: once a year, and with a lot of help from ‘hiders’ Hawk hides big boxes of swag then Tweets a clue to its location. From Hawaii to Dublin to London, fans scrambled to get there first, take a photo and Tweet it to Hawk. Continue reading

Yesterday, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders declared it ‘Cancer for College’ day after presenting the organization with a plaque during the second annual pub-crawl kick-off party led by Will Ferrell.

Cancer for College is an Athlebrity favorite. Founded by cancer survivor Craig Pollard, CFC gives other cancer survivors college scholarships…Pollard is BFF’s with Ferrell, which makes the ‘classy’ comedian a natural fit as their spokesperson. Continue reading
Soccer Team Darfur United Announces Fifteen Player Roster that Will Compete at the 2012 Viva World Cup in Iraqi Kurdistan

The dream is shaping up for Darfur United…as reported earlier, we will be following the progress of this amazing all-refugee soccer team.

Sixty-one players tried-out for a spot on the team in a refugee camp close to the Chad-Sudan border…they came from the twelve refugee camps that dot the area…fifteen players were chosen…this team will represent Darfur, the embattled region of Sudan, in the 2012 Viva World Cup in June, a soccer tournament for nationless people and other groups not represented by FIFA, the international soccer federation. On Monday April 9, 2012, the First Family hosted the 134th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This year’s theme: “Let’s Go, Let’s Play, Let’s Move” hosted more than 35,000 people on the South Lawn-including some of our beloved Major League Soccer players.

Kershaw’s Challenge for 2012 Season
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and defending Cy Young Award recipient Clayton Kershaw-and his wife Ellen- have announced that for the second consecutive year they will donate $100 to four different non-profits each time he strikes out an opposing batter.

During the 2012 season funds will go to four diverse non-profit causes: Arise Africa (Ariseafrica.org) projects in Zambia; the Peacock Foundation in Los Angeles (peacockfoundation.org); Mercy Street in Dallas (mercystreetdallas.org); and I Am Second (iamsecond.com). Continue reading

Pro Athletes Wash Childrens Feet in New Orleans During NCAA
At the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School in New Orleans, volunteers and sports athletes, including LL Cool J Steve Smith from the Carolina Panthers, gathered to wash the feet of needy children and provide them with a new pair of shoes during the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

This was one of four events where Buick has teamed up with former University of North Dakota basketball player Emmanuel “Manny” Ohonme and Samaritan’s Feet to donate 2,012 pairs of shoes and socks to impoverished children in the New Orleans region. Continue reading

Foundation’s Water-Safety, Health & Wellness Program Now Available in 22 States & a U.S. Military Base in Naples, Italy.

The Michael Phelps Foundation today announced the expansion of its signature program to 28 Boys & Girls Clubs, including one on a U.S. Naval installation in Naples, Italy. The Foundation will work with each Boys & Girls Club to implement its signature program, a learn-to-swim program designed to grow the sport of swimming and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle, especially among children. The program was launched as a national pilot in 2010 with six Boys & Girls Clubs and has instructed more than 2,300 children how to swim, with more than 80% of the participants receiving swimming instruction (safe) for the first time in their lives. Wounded Warriors to Receive Segways on Deck of USS Midway
Segs4Vets is a new Athlebrity favorite…the organization, founded in 2006, basically gives Segway Scooters to Wounded Warriors.

Following its first presentation, the Segs4Vets program rallied the US Military for a waiver allowing them to exceed the allotted donation amount…and they won, becoming the only recipient of a blanket waiver from the United States military, allowing a donation in excess of $1000 to active-duty military personnel. UNICEF Ambassador and NBA player Pau Gasol is launching today the storybook app Give a day. Narrated by Gasol in three languages— English, Spanish and Catalonian—this tale promotes child rights and will raise funds for UNICEF programs through Pau’s Project, an initiative that supports education and nutrition programs in Africa.

The Dick Baker Memorial Award will be given to Fernando Aguerre in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, during the annual surf industry leadership conference, Surf Summit 15. The conference is presented by the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) and the Board Retailers Association (BRA). The award will be presented to Aguerre by the Baker Family during the Closing Ceremonies of Surf Summit 15 on May 18, 2012.
