The World Cup is coming! Aside from eagerly awaiting the opening ceremony wardrobe choice of the Italian National Men’s Team, the kick-off is going to be one for the history books.
According to NewScientist:
The first kick of the 2014 Football World Cup in Brazil might not come from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Instead, if all goes to plan, a teenager paralysed from the waist down will use the world’s most advanced mind-controlled exoskeleton to swing at the ball.
The spectacle will showcase the Walk Again Project, an international collaboration using technology to overcome paralysis. The team’s exoskeleton supports the lower body and is controlled by patterns of brain activity detected by electrodes placed either on the scalp or within the brain itself. These signals are sent wirelessly to a computer worn by the wearer, that converts them into movements. The kicker will be one of a small group of people training in Brazil with a virtual exoskeleton before trying the real thing. Continue reading
Last week, Skateistan Cambodia had an extremely exciting visitor: international pro skateboarding legend Tony Hawk stopped by to spend a day at the Phnom Penh Park to inspire Cambodia’s emerging skaters.
“It’s great to see this facility and that the sport is growing. It’s incredible what [Skateistan] is doing here because skating is a good way to get kids active and playing together but not necessarily against each other.”-Tony Hawk
Tony met Skateistan staff and students, helped out with some classroom sessions, and blew everyone away with his impressive bag of tricks. He also participated in one of our arts-based educational classes, making a mask out of an old Skateistan deck alongside students and volunteers. Continue reading

Boards + Bands benefiting the Tony Hawk Foundation
Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk and Grammy Award-winning musician Ben Harper have invited their friends in the skate and music worlds to join them for this very special Boards + Bands auction starting December 5th. A member of the nonprofit Tony Hawk Foundation Board Of Directors, Harper conceived the idea to use pro skaters’ old decks to write song lyrics on and raise funds to build positive recreational outlets for at-risk youth.
The Boards + Bands fundraising initiative merges the worlds of skateboarding and music to benefit the work of the Tony Hawk Foundation. Hawk invited a select group of professional skateboarders to donate their personally ridden skateboards and submit the name of their favorite songs. Harper then sent those boards on to the appropriate artists with one simple message: “Please write the lyrics to this skater’s favorite song on his skateboard, and we’ll use it to create more skateparks for kids.”
These special collaboration skateboards will be available in an eBay celebrity auction launching December 5, and will be on display through the end of the auction at the GRAMMY Museum in downtown Los Angeles, California.
Funds raised through this effort will support at-risk youth through the creation of public skateparks in low-income communities across the U.S. These free, public skateparks are safe, sanctioned places for youth to come together, form communities, and practice the sport they love in a healthy environment. His name might not yet be familiar to you, but pay attention because this 15 year-old singer, songwriter and surfer is already being compared to his influencers – Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and Donovan Frankenreiter- and he’s very quick to point out that his activism comes before his music career.
“What I support comes before my music career, it’s not a marketing tool for me,” Cody explained via email, “I am an avid surfer and waterman so I do a lot around clean water. I represent and have worked closely w/ Hurley and their H2O program, SurfAid, Surf w/the Blind, Feeding the Soul and Home Free.”
In fact, Lovass was recently elected as perhaps youngest ever ambassador to SurfAid and even hit the stage with Jason Mraz during his Life Rolls On Benefit concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl in September.
Like I said, keep an eye on this kid. Not only can he sing, but he is a perfect example of the next-generation do-gooders. Gifted, giving, and full of love. More HERE.

I have to break from ‘tradition’ here and voice my outrage over the latest sham of a fundraiser.
Its called Lam-Bear-Ghini.
Basically, a bear has been put in a Lamborghini and is being driven up and down the California coast ‘for a good cause.’ Allegedly, any proceeds from the ‘video’ will be ‘used to feed the homeless over the holidays’.
According to the Facebook page, the brainchild behind this tasteless stunt is Justin Lyons, who hopes “we can make an appearance on tosh.0, Leno, kimmel, or Ellen!”
I am willing to bet-or at least hope-that our celebrities will not embrace this type of outdated ‘entertainment’ of abusing and using animals as props for our personal gain.
Is it not obvious that the bear is heavily drugged?
If you want to make yourself sick, go to the Facebook page:
Josef Newgarden, the youngest driver in the IndyCar series-is the latest athlete to join the ‘Show Your Soft Side’ campaign in response to the alarming incidence of animal abuse in Baltimore.
During the IndyCar series in Baltimore over Labor Day weekend, Best Friends Animal Society hooked Newgarden up with the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) and an anti-animal abuse campaign called ‘Show Your Soft Side.’
Aside from looking mighty-mighty-fine while posing with a kitten, he is a spokesperson for Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS); is the motorsports representative for BARCS and clearly a big believer in making a difference and encouraging others to do the same. Plus-he walks the walk. Seeing as he is a huge advocate of animal adoption and the spaying/neutering of animals rather than euthanasia, he went on to adopt the adorable kitten from the photo shoot.
“The prince has arrived.” Newgarden shared. “Thanks to @BARCS_SHELTER and @southwestair for helping facilitate the move. Supporting local animal adoptions is important to me, and Simba was a good luck charm to me in Baltimore this year for the @indycarofficial race. Happy to bring him into our family. Support @bestfriendsanimalsociety and your local shelters.”
This campaign features photo shoots with Baltimore athletes from the Ravens and Orioles with their pets.

Chandler to light the UNICEF Snowflake this Friday on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue to help raise awareness for children and families in Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan
The U.S. Fund for UNICEF today announced that NY Knicks’ Tyson Chandler is the newest UNICEF Ambassador. Chandler—the first American NBA player to be named a UNICEF Ambassador—will fundraise, educate and advocate on behalf of vulnerable children around the world.
In his first role as UNICEF Ambassador, Chandler will light the UNICEF Snowflake this Friday on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City. The lighting ceremony will help raise awareness of areas of the Philippines ravaged by Super Typhoon Haiyan. The latest estimates indicate that as many as four million children could now be affected by the disaster. UNICEF is providing children and families with immediate necessities including food, water, and medicine. Designed by Ingo Maurer and dedicated to UNICEF by The Stonbely Family Foundation in 2002, the Snowflake serves as a beacon of hope and compassion.
Following his gold medal win with the U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball team at the London Olympics, Chandler travelled to Tanzania with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. While in Tanzania, Chandler visited UNICEF-supported programs that provide children with life and vocational skills training and health centers for mothers of children with HIV/AIDS.
“Traveling to Africa with UNICEF and seeing kids who don’t have access to an education, or who are living on the streets was a life-changing experience for me,” said Chandler. “I’m incredibly honored to help raise awareness of UNICEF’s work that’s truly making a difference for the lives of children.” Continue reading

NBA star Metta World Peace is urging everyone to “always report animal abuse” in a new spot from PETA.
From PETA: Cruelty to animals takes many forms, including keeping dogs chained up outside without adequate food, water, or shelter; failing to provide hurt or sick animals with veterinary care; leaving dogs in hot cars on warm days; and much, much more. If you ever see or suspect that an animal is being neglected or abused, call your local authorities immediately or contact PETA for assistance. For animals in danger, one phone call can be the difference between life and perhaps a horrible death.
And yes, if you’re having a WTF moment its because old Metta aka Ron Artest, was facing animal cruelty charges in 2007 for failing to feed his dog-there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute him but the dog was adopted by a family that knows how to put food in a bowl. Regardless, we love the message and PETA.

Jordan Farmar Foundation to Provide Scholarships to Union Rescue Mission Youth
Two-time NBA Champion and returning LA Lakers guard Jordan Farmar is pleased to announce that his sixth annual Hoop Farm Basketball Camp is opening its doors from July 29 – August 1, 2013 at UCLA’s newly renovated Pauley Pavilion. Farmar, a former UCLA Bruin, along with special guests from the NBA, will be in attendance all day to teach the campers.
All proceeds from the camp will be donated to The Jordan Farmar Foundation’s Hoop Farm Scholarship Fund, which will be used to provide camp tuition scholarships to athletes from underrepresented neighborhoods and those who show great potential. This year, scholarships will go to boys and girls from a variety of organizations, including the Department of Children & Family Services, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club and the Union Rescue Mission, which is one of the largest rescue missions of its kind in the United States and the oldest in Los Angeles. “As a native of Los Angeles, I’ve always held this city close to my heart and try to give back in every way that I can,” said Farmar. “Hoop Farm is a great opportunity for me not only to reconnect with local kids but to also help them improve their skills on the court.” This year, nearly 100 campers will be attending Hoop Farm on a scholarship.
Collaboration empowered 150 children through sports in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
On July 18th and 19th, Give-A-Ball Foundation teamed up with Haiti-based J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO) to carry out the Give-A-Ball Journey Program, a series of soccer clinics and tournament-style games held in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The event offered 150 girls and boys between the ages of 8 and 14 the opportunity to engage in team-oriented sports, while building and improving their athletic skills and reinforcing fundamentals vital to their development.
Tosin Fawibe, Founder and President of Give-A-Ball Foundation, Inc., sees the partnership as an opportunity to impact the lives of children in a powerful, memorable way. “Our Give-A-Ball Journey Program in Haiti was an amazing experience that allowed us to connect with the local children through soccer,” he said. “I’m glad our organization could join forces with J/P HRO to put smiles on the faces of 150 children and, more importantly, to reinforce health, fitness, education, teamwork, and character fundamentals that will help these children as they grow and develop—on and off the soccer field.” Continue reading
