Walking on Water: The Derek Rabelo Story

“We need to live by faith, not by sight.” ~Derek Rabelo

17 year-old Derek Rabelo was born blind, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream of surfing Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu.

“Pipeline is basically the ultimate wave in a lot of ways — just a short, intense, dangerous wave that’s close to the beach,” said Kelly Slater, 11-time World Champion surfer. “Many surfers with sight do not venture out even after they see that others can do it.”

But he DID do it, and after years of training and inspiring the worlds top surfers Rableo’s story is set to be immortalized in film by pro-surfer and film producer Bryan Jennings.

Jennings met Rabelo in May 2012, watched his YouTube video (warning-may cause goose-bumps) and in July, brought him to So-Cal as a special guest for the Walking On Water Surf camps and to start filming the Beyond Sight movie which attracted the crème de la crème of the surfing world who were willing to surf and film with Derek. These surfers included 11X world champ Kelly Slater, 3x world champ Tom Curren, Laird Hamilton, Rob Machado, Damien Hobgood, Makua Rothman, Jadson Andre, Adriano De Souza, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Lakey Peterson, and Coco Ho.

We think the video sums it up pretty well and we’re hoping that in addition to spending $5-bucks on a latte, you’ll consider supporting the production of this film.
