Serge Ibaka Aids Efforts in Horn of Africa

Serge Ibaka Aids Efforts in Horn of Africa

It is my duty to contribute and help other kids from my continent so they have the same will to improve every day and, through basketball, become role models, responsible persons and proud of their origins. This is the spirit of the adidas Ibaka Charity Program.” ~Serge Ibaka

During the NBA lock-out, we’ve seen ‘big names’ scrambling for the next good run, hosting exhibition games that are allegedly for charity-yet nary a word about the beneficiaries. Personally, I’m more interested in our mighty-mighty-fine ballers who are out there doing more than just ‘talking the talk’, to wit, NBA player Serge Ibaka.

The Oklahoma City Thunder player, currently hooping it up overseas, hails from the Congo and has used his NBA lock-out time to spread the word about his collaboration with Unicef and adidas to raise funds for the Horn of Africa. Ibaka will donate $100 for every block during the Eurobasket 2011.

serge_ibaka_athlebrities_chairty

“My country and all the African continent are my roots and they form my identity, that is why it’s a priority for me to try to help the sports and social development,” writes Ibaka on his website. “Basketball is a powerful tool to encourage the personal development and the learning of positive values and to acquire aptitudes for life. At the same time, increasing the social unity and the communication between cultures helps reaching peace and the economic development of all the communities.”

Ron Artest: Dancing For a Cause

Ron Artest: Dancing For a Cause

That’s the only reason I’m doing it, I’m doing it for a cause.” –Ron Artest in re: ‘Dancing With the Stars’

After much speculation, the rumor-mill is closed and it’s confirmed that Lakers forward Ron Artest has joined the cast of “Dancing With The Stars.” Granted, I’ve never watched an episode but between Ron-Ron and Nancy Grace it might suck me in this year-especially since Artest – one of the most entertaining ballers to hit the court- is gonna dance his way towards a huge donation for the Cancer Research Foundation.

ronartestdaughterdiamond_athlebrities

“I’m doing the Cha-cha-cha my first week,” Artest said. “We’re going to get past [the first round]. I want to work hard and see where it takes me. I don’t know how far I’m going to go, but I’m going to try.”

According to the LA Times, Artest agreed to ‘dance for a cause’ after his daughter Diamond said “Daddy you can do it.” In 2007, Diamond was diagnosed with wilms tumor, a kidney cancer that affects children. She successfully fought the disease and Artest said he plans to donate the money he earns (allegedly a minimum of $125,000) on “Dancing with the Stars” to the Cancer Research Foundation.

Samuel Eto’o: The Worlds Highest Paid Athlete VS Racism?

Samuel Eto’o: The Worlds Highest Paid Athlete VS Racism?

A lot of interest this week after soccer stud Samuel Eto’o left Inter Milan and signed a three-year deal with some random Russian club, Anzhi Makhachkala, for an estimated $29M PER SEASON which could essentially make him the highest paid athlete in professional sports.

“This evening, Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto’o signed a personal three-year contract with Anzhi Makhachkala,” the club said in a statement issued after Eto’o completed a medical on Wednesday evening.

samuel_etoo-athlebrities

For more on the beautiful inner-drama of soccer transfers and fighting Russian billionaires, the Wall Street Journal breaks it down nicely for ya.

But we here at Athlebrities are wondering what he’s gonna do with all that cash? About four years ago, he established a foundation with the mission of delivering the less privileged from abject poverty and he recently visited a Sports study center in Gabon. It also seems a natural fit for Eto’o to possibly do something big to combat racism in soccer?

Over the years, Eto’o has been the subject of racist taunts by an opposing teams’ supporters, who’ve made monkey-like chants whenever he had possession of the ball. Referee’s have let it slide, claiming the behavior of the crowd is ‘normal’. At one point, Eto’o walked off the field and video captured him saying “No mas” (“No more”). Last year, as the racists again began chatting, they were drowned out by the rest of the stadium who chanted loudly enough to drown them out. A small step but progress none-the-less?

Due to ongoing racism, Eto’o stopped bringing family members to matches. “It is something that has affected me personally. I think players, leaders, and the media have to join forces so that no one feels looked down upon because of the color of their skin. At this moment in time I prefer my children don’t go to football matches. In the stands they have to listen to things that are difficult to explain to a child. It is better they aren’t exposed to it.”

And with that, Athlebrities would like to see Samuel Eto’o use some of the big money to establish a ‘No Mas’ campaign in efforts to stomp out racism in sports.

Boris Becker Visits Haiti With Laureus

Boris Becker Visits Haiti With Laureus

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair.” –Nelson Mandela

Boris Becker and his wife made headlines recently in the UK’s Daily Mail, which did an exceptional job of posting photos of Mrs. Becker in her swimsuit and a one-liner about the couple’s recent trip to Haiti.

So, picking up where they left off, Athlebrities will fill in the blanks for you. Becker, a Laureus Academy Member and Ambassador Sabine Christiansen were in Haiti visiting a new Laureus-supported soccer project.

The project which centers around the building of a new soccer school, is being developed from the ground-up in an area directly affected by the devastating earthquakes that hit last year. The venture is being supported in collaboration with the Haitian Football Association.

borisbeckerlaureshaiti

“I’m very impressed by the concept of the school being built here. The money is being used wisely and is a great example of an investment that can really help the kids from Haiti,” said Becker after playing soccer with a group of local kids.

Laureus is composed of three core elements: the Laureus World Sports Academy, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Laureus World Sports Awards. Collectively they celebrate the extraordinary achievements of athletes past and present and harness the power of sport to promote social change.

I couldn’t possibly cover all the good things Laureus is doing in the world or list all the celebrities and athletes who support them. For example, Academy Member and very much alive skateboard legend Tony Hawk was in London recently visiting the fantastic Laureus-supported ‘Fight for Peace’ boxing project in North Woolwich.

Tony Hawk Is NOT Dead

Tony Hawk Is NOT Dead

tonyhawkisnotdead

Lots of fun on Twitter this week as Tony Hawk was busy dealing with his own death…when tweets began circulating that the legendary skateboarder had passed away, someone on Facebook created a “R.I.P. Tony Hawk (1968 – 2011)” page. Hawk responded by asking ‘fans’ to “like” his fake death, tweeting:

‘If 100k people “like” your fake death, you die. If 1 mil people like your real death, you’re canonized. Test the theory: http://t.co/13tv9O9

So test away kids, as of this morning, more than 67,000 people “like” the fact that Tony Hawk might be dead. Hopefully the theory tests false and he’s still around after the page hits 101,000 ‘likes.’ What I’d really “like” is for each person who likes his death to donate a buck to Tony’s Foundation, or some other cause…put your money where your hate is people.

Hawk’s spokeswoman Sarah Hall said she had no idea how the rumors got started, but they’ve turned into something of a joke now. “Tony is a terrific sport and had a great sense of humor about it,” Hall said.

Despite ‘being dead’ Hawk is currently doing good things on the Quiksilver Birdhouse tour…highlights, ironically enough, on SHRED OR DIE.

Carmelo Anthony Foundation: 2nd Hoops Court Dedicated

While LaLa is out promoting women as perverts, her husband, Athlebrity favorite Carmelo Anthony, is out promoting safe courts for kids to hoop on.

Earlier this month, Melo via his Carmelo Anthony Foundation, dedicated its 2nd basketball court in Puerto Rico as part of the Courts 4 Kids program. The first time was in July 2010 in the San Juan district of La Perla.

Celebrities & Athletes Encourage Charity on 10-Year Anniversary of 9/11

Celebrities & Athletes Encourage Charity on 10-Year Anniversary of 9/11

iwill

Hundreds of people, including celebrities and athletes, have already signed up to join the 9/11 Tribute Movement, a drive to organize the single largest day of charitable service in U.S. history in observance of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11.

MyGoodDeed, a leading 9/11 nonprofit organization, and HandsOn Network, the volunteer activation division of Points of Light Institute, recently launched a inspiring national public service announcement (PSA) campaign themed “I will (pay tribute).”

The PSA’s feature relatives of 9/11 victims and survivors of the attacks, along with celebrities and others encouraging people everywhere to engage in good deeds and voluntary service in honor of those who perished in the attacks. Appearing in the campaign ads and/or online are more than 30 actors, singers and sports figures, including Samuel L. Jackson, Mariska Hargitay, Hillary Duff, Jordin Sparks, New York Yankees’ first baseman Mark Teixeira and Cleveland Cavaliers’ Baron Davis.

Each shares their good deed plans for 9/11…a few that caught my eye:

“I will…design and wear a bow tie for all the victims of 9/11.” -Dhani Jones

“I will…volunteer in my community and help out people in need.” –NY Yankee Mark Teixeira

“I will…find a way to help someone become more literate on that day.” -Samuel L. Jackson

“I will…take the kids from the Rising Stars of America Foundation to clean up the beach.” -Baron Davis

“I Will’s” posted from family and friends include: I will promote peace and support beyond 911…I will watch USA play Ireland in the Rugby World Cup…I will proudly wear a black armband in remembrance of all 9/11 victims…I will pray for the people who lost a loved one on this day and for our troops, law enforcement, and fire engineers all over the nation…I will say a prayer at my grandsons first birthday party, it seems odd celebrating such a joyous occasion on such a sad date in history.

You can read more, view the PSA’s and add your own “I will” tribute on the 9/11 Day Observance Facebook page (Facebook.com/911day) and website (911day.org).

LPGA Supports ‘Caddy For A Cure’

LPGA Supports ‘Caddy For A Cure’

One of my favorite organizations, Caddy For A Cure, got some serious love from the LPGA during the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola in Portland last week.

‘Caddy For A Cure’ gives people a once in a lifetime experience of caddying for professional golfers while raising money for charity. The most recent event gave winners caddy-duties for three of the best from the LPGA: Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis and Natalie Gulbis.

paulacreamer_caddyforacure

‘Caddy For A Cure’ was founded by Russ Holden 18 years ago after his friends son Christian was born with Fanconi Anemia, a devastating genetic bone marrow disorder. Christian now serves as the National Spokesperson for the organization, and has been capturing hearts on the golf courses for years. In fact, Christian’s list of celebrity-golf buddies include: Boo Weekly, Camilo Villegas, Phil Mickleson, Jim Furyk, Ricky Fowler and many others

‘Caddy For A Cure’ has been such a success that it’s now giving fans a chance to ‘Roadie For A Cure’ with Shania Twain as the first artist to support the cause. Athlebrities has had both eyes on ‘Caddy For A Cure’ for years and couldn’t be happier at their continued success. Plus, Christian is about the best spokesperson in the world, with an endearing disposition and a wonderfully wicked sense of humor.

100% of the money raised by ‘Caddy For A Cure’ and ‘Roadie For A Cure’ goes to charity. Give ‘em some love.

Surfer’s Healing Helps Hunter Brown Achieve Success

Surfer’s Healing Helps Hunter Brown Achieve Success

It is possible to overcome some of the challenges of Autism and follow your dreams.“- Hunter’s Voice August 2011

Have you met Hunter Brown? This amazing little boy was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, and now, at tens years old, Hunter has become a ‘star’ in his own right, singing the National Anthem at LA Ride for Autism and is gearing up to sing the National Anthem and another song right before the inspirational Keynote Dr. Temple Grandin takes the stage in Pasadena for the Autism Conferences of America this Friday morning.

huntersvoice

I first met Hunter when he was participating in a Surfer’s Healing event. In case you haven’t heard of the amazing organization, Surfers Healing was founded by Israel (Izzy) and Danielle Paskowitz and is making huge waves helping kids with autism harness the healing power of the ocean via surfing.

Their son, Isaiah, was diagnosed with autism at age three. Like many children with autism, he often suffered from sensory overload– simple sensations could overwhelm him. The ocean was the one place where he seemed to find respite. A former competitive surfer, Israel hit upon an idea–with Isaiah on the front of his surfboard, and Izzy steering from the back, the two spent the day surfing together. Surfing had a profound impact on Isaiah. Israel and Danielle decided they wanted to share this unique therapy with other children with autism. They began to host day camps at the beach where children with autism and their families could be exposed to a completely new experience of surfing

Also, it looks like Oprah is finally hip to Izzy and work…check out ‘The Swell Life’ which chronicles a summer with the world-class surfer and his wife as they raise their three children and run Surfer’s Healing.

hunter_dean_mcdermott

In 2007, when he was 7-years-old, Hunter (above with actor Dean McDermott), attended his first Surfer’s Healing camp…he has attended SH three times. He “absolutely loves Izzy and the entire Surfer’s Healing family” and has since nurtured his love for singing.

“At Surfer’s Healing, Hunter noticed a calmness from the kids when they were out in the water,” explains Hunter’s mom Lisa, “He’s also found that music has done the same thing for him as surfing has, from Mozart when he was a baby, to music classes as a toddler and music in Elementary school, he’s now being able to perform in a choral ensemble and sing solos for events all over…music has been an instrumental part of his journey with Autism and his road to recovery.”

22nd Annual Waterman’s Ball

22nd Annual Waterman’s Ball

Almost half a million dollars in net proceeds rolled in from the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association’s (SIMA) 22nd annual Waterman’s Weekend. The tight knit surfing community gathered Friday, at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Nigel, to honor three very important members of their tribe. Greg Long, was awarded Watermen of the Year, former Malibu Mayor Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner, for Environmentalist of the Year, and George Downing, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. All three individuals have helped change the face of the sport, the industry, and the ocean’s environment.

greg-long-helps-geroge-downing-on-stage-vip-hour

Athlebrities had a chance to speak with Greg Long, who was very humbled by his peers and the entire surf industries need to honor him for his actions in and out of the water. He also thanked his parents for installing morals and values early on, that have allowed him to live a good, clean, healthy life, and he encourages and continues to inspire others to do the same. When asked why the surf industry is much more into giving back Long explained,“it would just be naïve for people to think to be able to build such an amazing industry and not be giving back and protecting and preserving those same resources for the generations to come… I’m proud to say I am surfer and part of this kind of tribe, and it is just as much about giving back as receiving the joy that the ocean gives us.”

middle-greag-long-far-right-jay-zuma

When asked what’s the one thing we could all do to support the Waterman’s cause Long answered, “I think the simple thing is to educate yourself and educate others and once you have that power behind yourself and others then your action will follow suite…it doesn’t take much to realize your obligation as a human being, not to just enjoy your time but, also to hope that others will as well and by educating yourself, it is the most powerful tool.” Greg also supports the Surfrider Foundation, Save the Waves Foundation, Waves for Water and the San Onofre Foundation.

While accepting his Lifetime Achievement Award, George Downing spoke of the three powers on Earth that he learned from legendary surfer John Kelly, the power of God, the power of money and people power. Downing explained, “Now God is so busy he cant pay attention to what we are trying to accomplish here, the legal aspects of what we do, ends up in the courts, and the more money you have the more you go in to courts, the only thing that we have is the power of people. When people get up and do those things that they want to accomplish, we will accomplish it.” He also gave thanks for all that Waikiki has given surfing and said to the crowd, “So, always remember to take care of Waikiki, I leave that in your hands…we’ve got a wonderful sport, take care of it, it nurtures itself if we take care of the facilities that make it all happen.”

The purpose and most important objective of gathering the surf community and 200 member brands that represent SIMA, is giving back and helping to protect the very thing that gives them an industry in the first place, the ocean. Hosted by the wonderful and talented Sal Masekela, this years festivities set a Waterman’s record raising close to $400,000 for SIMA’s beneficiaries.

On Friday night, SIMA held their 22nd annual Waterman’s Ball as part of their weekend activities to raise funds for 20 ocean-conservation organizations. Honored at the event were three surf industry legends, George Downing, Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner and Greg Long.

Athlebrities will have a full review posted soon, but in the meantime, we were very excited to speak with Greg Long about his actions in and out of the water (full interview will be posted on Look to the Stars). He did tell us that his brother Rusty-who was badly burned in an accident-was to be released from the hospital on Saturday-much earlier than expected. Also spotted in the crown, Nia Peeples-who was sending out supportive tweets all night; Jane’s Addiction front man Perry Farrell and family, and Pamela Anderson with her hot surfer boyfriend Jon Rose.

NFL Players Invited to White House for Iftar Dinner

NFL Players Invited to White House for Iftar Dinner

Two of the nicest guys in the world, Minnesota Vikings safety Husain Abdullah and his brother Arizona Cardinals safety Hamza, attended the annual ‘iftar’ dinner last night at the White House to celebrate Ramadan, a holy month in the Muslim calendar.

husain_hamza_abdullah

Iftar is the meal that Muslims eat at sundown, when they break their daylong fast during Ramadan. President Obama has hosted an annual ceremonial iftar celebration each year since he took office, inviting members of Congress and his administration to dine with members of the Muslim community and ambassadors from predominantly Muslim nations.

Like all Muslims, Abdullah fasts — no food or water — from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan, which this year runs from August 1-29. Over the course of his career, Abdullah has worked with Vikings trainers to develop a dietary plan to keep him fueled for the often grueling training camp schedule.

“I’ll hydrate, (and at) 2 a.m. get a protein shake, kind of a meal-replacement thing, and I’ll eat some food if I’ve got it,” Abdullah said. “Then just have dinner and breakfast. … It takes some mental toughness. I’m starting to get used to it. I’ve been doing it since I was 7 — I’m 26 now. It’s not overly difficult. (Source)

Celebrities Issue Pleas for East Africa

Celebrities Issue Pleas for East Africa

By now, I’m sure you’re aware that ten of thousands of Somalis are literally starving to death in East African refugee camps…militants are blocking aid while the world watches in horror…mothers are fighting each other to feed their babies and celebrities are urging our involvement.

Yahoo! News spoke to a reporter in Somalia who spoke about what it’s like in the refugee camps of the war-torn and famished country.

“There was no food, no help. There are kids dying left and right—I’m not exaggerating. They buried 12 on the day I visited,” said Jason Straziuso, a reporter for the Associated Press.

“The most touching thing so far has been when this small child waved at me yesterday. I stuck my head in her tent and she was lying, motionless, flies flying everywhere and she sort of stuck her head up and waved at me,” he said. “That put a lump in my throat because I don’t know that she’s going to get better, in fact I think she has a good chance of not getting better.”

david_beckham_baby_harper1

Stepping up to the plate are numerous athlebrities and celebrities urging us all to give what we can to Save the Children. David Beckham (pictured above with baby Harper) was one of the first to issue a plea for help. Earlier this week, Victoria Beckham tweeted “children need your help,” and this morning, my favorite tapa, Rafael Nadal asked for our help via Facebook:

“Good morning Everyone. I need one thing. Millions of children are facing starvation right now – this doesn’t have to happen….Save The Children has launched an emergency aid response in Africa. Please watch this video, share with friends and download Bob Marley & The Wailer’s single ‘High Tide or Low Tide’ with all proceeds going to the East Africa food crisis appeal. You can help now. Thanks! Rafa”

Social Media and Prominent Houston Athletes Lead Support for Grieving Family

Social Media and Prominent Houston Athletes Lead Support for Grieving Family

This week’s news was filled with your typical stories of economic gloom, greedy lockouts, senseless shootings, and waging wars. Just when you think the human race has taken a turn for the worst, comes a story out of Houston, Texas, where tragedy is bringing people from all over the world, of all faiths and backgrounds together, to help a family, many have never even met.

berry_family

The Berry family was traveling back from their annual Colorado trip over the 4th of July weekend when their passenger van was hit head on by a distracted driver of a 4runner just outside of Fort Stockton, Texas. Joshua Berry, 40, and Robin Berry, 41, died on the scene. Their sons Peter, 9 and Aaron, 8 suffered spinal cord injuries and are paralyzed from the waist down. Daughter Willa, 6, suffered a broken arm, ankle and knee. The driver 31, year old Michael Doyle, from Arizona, became distracted while looking for a DVD and was severely injured. His passenger and wife 28, year old Collen Doyle was killed on impact and their one-year-old daughter, was mercifully unharmed.

The Berry children began receiving a magnitude of support and donations after Justin Bieber, Scott Braun and Jared Paul created the Show Your Hearts campaign. Using social media as his forum, Bieber tweeted: “tomorrow we all change our profile pics on Twitter and Facebook and make a donation #SHOWYOURHEARTS. spread the word. #makeachange.”  The day that tweet went out, #SHOWYOURHEARTS began trending all over the world, even as far as China. Over the next few hours celebrities like P-Diddy, Brittney Spears, the cast of Glee, Lady Gaga, and even Ellen DeGeneres got involved, taking to their own Twitter accounts to change their profile pictures and make donations in order to raise awareness and funds for the Joshua and Robbin Berry’s Children’s Trust.

berry

With one tweet, a movement was started over night. Prominent Houston sports figures like Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, tight end Owen Daniels, and tackle Eric Winston paid a hospital visit to the boys. Even new Houstonian and Texans first round pick J.J. Watt dropped by and gave the boys his personal cell phone and e-mail and told them they could call him anytime. Before a game Astros All-Star Hunter Pence, stopped by to drop off some autographed bats and play video games with the eldest Peter.

peter_berry_hunter_pence

The power these athletes and celebrities are given by their fans and the media means nothing unless they are able to use their influence for something bigger than themselves, bigger than all of us. So many of these athletes and celebrities worth is based on their ability to sell out a stadium, push some t-shirt or CD, or appear on reality TV, but all that means nothing unless they are using the power society bestows upon them to influence others to make a difference. Doing good things is contagious and truly at our core, together we can all make a difference.

The tender love and encouragement these children have received keeps pouring in. From lemonade stands in Houston, to prestigious restaurants, and art galleries in Los Angeles. There have been benefit concerts held on their behalf. The Houston Rockets started the 10,000 hugs to help campaign. Family owned bakeries and salons have been holding fundraisers and the tremendous support from the Jewish community that both Joshua and Robin were heavily involved in has been overwhelming.

This is only the beginning for the children who not only have to deal with the grief of losing both their parents, but there is also the medical cost, rehab, schooling and basic necessities. The two boys are currently being treated in Chicago, at the Shriners Hospital for Children. Willa is in Houston, being cared for by relatives. The children’s legal guardian will be Joshua’s brother Matthew Berry and his wife Simone. On Saturday Simone released a video on the families Facebook page stating, “you have given us the strength, courage, hope and healing energy to get through everyday…the children are working very, very hard on their long journey ahead. They continue to be inspired and thrive on all your love and support as they gain mobility and independence.”

Michael Doyle is recovering with his daughter back in Arizona and dealing with the loss of his wife. A grand jury later this month will decide whether to charge Doyle with criminally negligent homicide and injury to a child. The Berry family has no plans to sue. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Berry and Doyle families as they both deal with their own tragedies.
