Drew Brees Tackles Hunger for WFP

Drew Brees Tackles Hunger for WFP

The world’s largest hunger-fighting organization, the World Food Programme, has a host of celebrity ambassadors spreading awareness about the amazing work the WFP does at getting food to victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters…they even help rebuild communities after feeding them, so I wasn’t surprised to find NFL star Drew Brees in the latest PSA from the WFP, because he is and always will be one of the most committed athletes to give back.

Did you know that hunger is the world’s number one health risk? Neither did I. But thanks to Drew Brees, my awareness has been raised. Hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, Malaria and tuberculosis combined. So put down your Big-Macs and support the WFP-its run entirely through volunteer donations.

Steve Nash Nabs Charity Award

Steve Nash Nabs Charity Award

Did any of my readers catch NBA stud Steve Nash playing soccer with former homeless graduates of Street Soccer USA last Thursday evening in Sarah Roosevelt Park in New York City’s Chinatown? The 2-time NBA MVP and undeniable humanitarian, has essentially put Street Soccer USA on the map with his years of unwavering support. And last week, Nash was presented the prestigious Sport for Social Change Award at the French Cultural Embassy in Manhattan.

“Steve both personally and through his foundation sets the gold standard in term of athletes using sport to drive outcomes for a better world, which is why we are so pleased to recognize him,” said Lawrence Cann, founder of Street Soccer USA and creator of the Sport For Social Change Awards.

I daresay that this is proof that sports and athlebrities can change the world for the better? Street Soccer USA is a national organization teaching job and life skills to homeless youth and adults through sport in 18 cities with 75% success rate in terms of educational and job placement outcomes. And yes, they have a homeless World Cup which, if watched, will change you in ways I can’t describe. Currently Street Soccer USA is sending 8 men and 8 women who have overcome homelessness through the Street Soccer USA program during the last year to Paris for the games and are seeking sponsors for the last few members of the team.

Jason David’s Charity Weekend

Jason David’s Charity Weekend

The 3rd Annual Jason David Celebrity Charity weekend went down in So-Cal June 23-25 to benefit his Foundation and raise awareness/funds for kidney disease while making over 250 kids smile.

The three day event, hosted by the former NFL player and Superbowl Champion, Jason David, was held in memory of his cousin Shay, who tragically passed away from kidney disease in 2007.

“My cousin Shay endured many surgeries before he passed away which crippled him sometimes to the point where he was unable to walk. My cousin never gave up he fought through all of his surgeries and struggles with the same resolve each time. It is important to me that I continue his fight for the sake of others who suffer from the disease,” stated Jason David, founder and president of JDCF.

Over 250 kids attended the 6th Annual Youth Football Skills Camp portion of the event-for FREE while enjoying hands on coaching, football drills and love from their ‘coaches’ Jason David, Hamza Abdullah (Arizona Cardinals) and Husain Abdullah (Minnesota Vikings).

Jason David’s Corner Foundation (JDCF)

Basketball Stars Visit UNICEF Supported Malnutrition Treatment Centre in Haiti

NBA Stars Unite for Haitian Children

NBA star Samuel Dalembert, WNBA star Nykesha Sales and Chris Clunie were in Haiti recently, to visit a malnutrition center with UNICEF.

“To be here firsthand, on the ground, visiting with the kids, that opens our eyes, gives us perspective,” said Clunie, Senior Coordinator, NBA Basketball Operations. (AP Photo/Ramon Espinosa)

During the visit, Dalembert also announced that he plans to build a sports complex in the country: “This will be a center where young people can go to weekend for fun and study…they will have the opportunity to continue their homework there and go to school,” said Dalembert, adding, “this will be something like YMCA.”

Currently, the Sacramento King player is a free-agent. Personally, I don’t care which team the Haitian born mighty-mighty fine man shoots hoops with. If the Miami Heat were to nab him, fine, it just puts him closer to Haiti. I can only hope that his inspiration will penetrate some of the NBA ego’s out there.

Urban Zen: Charity Style

Urban Zen Charity Style

Designer Donna Karan has effectively moved from designer to humanitarian. If you haevnt been paying attention to her, you’re missing out on a lot of Zen in your life. The goddess’s Urban Zen Foundation in New York creates, connects and collaborates to raise awareness and inspire change in the areas of well-being, preserving cultures and empowering children.

During this last month alone, the Urban Zen Foundation has either hosted or been the recipient of a slew of charitable events including the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic (photo above Donna Karan (L) and cohost Hugh Jackman with famed Argentianina Polo player Nacho Figueras), Operation Warrior Wellness, Viva Vevolution, The First Annual Apple Awards, An Evening with the Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, The Wayuu Taya Gala and the Bent on Learning Gala. (Bent on Learning integrates yoga and meditation into New York City public schools and youth centers to reduce stress and improve concentration, self-esteem and overall health.)

The Hollywood Pledge: Terrell Owens

The Hollywood Pledge: Terrell Owens

During my hiatus, I had the great privilege of working on the Hollywood Pledge. In a nutshell, it’s Hollywoods response to Warren Buffets Giving Pledge and encourages celebrities to ‘give back’ and interact with fans while encouraging them to get involved and spread the Love.

Celebrities who have already taken the H’wood Pledge include Sean Penn, Hugh Jackman, Denzel Washington, Ricky Martin, Jason Taylor, Adrian Peterson, Dwight Howard and his arms, and Terrell Owens.

The launch party for the initiative was held on June 4 at a private home in Beverly Hills. Blake Lewis (American Idol season 6) spun and performed legendary beat-box sounds next to the infinity pool, while inside, invited celebrity Pledges filmed PSA’s for their causes.

And this is where I take a moment to thank Terrell Owens. Because it’s not just about taking the Pledge, it’s about acting the Pledge. While numerous media outlets are praising the celebrities for getting involved, I feel fortunate to have witnessed Love in action. During the event, while T.O was filming his PSA for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, there was a young boy sitting quietly in the corner, not saying a word but you could tell a simply hello from one of his sports hero would change is life. Unprompted, TO stopped the filming, walked over to the boy, knelt down, shook his hand, and posed for a photo. Needless to say, this young boys life-who is a patient at the Children’s Hospital-was changed for the better.

And that’s what I mean when I say give back. Give back love and change the World. It’s simple. We don’t need to ‘raise awareness’ about cancer or any disease, we are all aware, what we really need to do is simply raise the love towards those who are suffering.

Be love.

Robert Horry’s Letter to His Daughter

Robert Horry’s Letter to His Daughter

It’s Fathers Day and aside from thinking about my own father, I thought about NBA great Robert Horry and the pain he must be feeling after the recent death of his daughter Ashlyn to a rare genetic disorder known as ‘1p36 deletion syndrome.’

I wanted to write about it, but felt my words would have fallen short. And I would have been right. Horry penned a letter to his daughter ‘Ashlyn’s Smile’ and can be read in its entirety HERE.

In part, Horry writes:
On this day, Father’s Day, your spirit is watching over me and making sure we are all safe and warm. I know you are smiling on life, love and family, and waiting for us to join you. There will come a time when we will again see that engaging smile that brought us so much joy each day of your life…In your loving memory, we will persistently seek to increase awareness of 1p36 deletion syndrome through your foundation. We will bring hope to others around the world, to the children who suffer from the same genetic disorder, and to those parents and families who share the same desperation.

Yao Ming Will Only Discuss Charity

Yao Ming Will Only Discuss Charity

Can we please get some more athlebrities like NBA star/humanitarian Yao Ming? The Houston Rocket becomes a restricted free agent July 1, and despite being battered with questions about his ankle, Yao won’t discuss it, instead, he ‘declined to answer questions about his plans at an appearance on behalf of the Special Olympics on Sunday, saying he didn’t want to discuss anything not related to his work with the charity.’

Again, I hear Salt ‘N’ Pepa singing in the background.

Prior to his Special Olympics appearance, the mighty-mighty good man attended Friday’s completion ceremony of the Jiuquan special education school, which received a donation of 2.5 million yuan ($385,000) from the Yao Foundation and the Shanghai Special-care Foundation after breaking ground in 2009. Kelly Slater IS the Only King

King Slater

That’s the title of this post because his name is enough…next week, the Ten Time Word Surf Champ and long-standing King of all things Athlebrity, Kelly Slater, will be given a key to the city of Huntington Beach by Mayor Joe Carchio.

Now, what strikes me as criminal is this…the following PSA with King Slater has only been viewed 1,000 times on Youtube? Do we not wanna save our oceans? Why has the ‘Golf Boys” video gotten over 500k hits in a day while this breath-taking clip sits on the shelf collecting dust? Seriously, what’s not to like?

And if I were to tell you that Slater was chillen with the Dalai Lama last week for a youth panel, might you pay attention to what his passions are?

I chuckled to myself-loudly-as Lebron James slowly slipped off his throne. He should have never been put there in the first place…I only bring this up because I firmly believe that Slater is the most dominate athlete ever. Lebron is all things our sports heroes should NOT be. Slater is everything they should. Yes, I am comparing the two because it baffles me that fans would applaud the efforts of an athlete who has done nothing to better humanity while ignoring the efforts of someone who should be on the cover of Sports Illustrated already.

Natural talent, a big heart and finer than fine. And he saves puppies.

“Golf Boys” Video Helps Charity

“Golf Boys” Video Helps Charity

PGA golfer Ben Crane-along with buddies- Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, & Hunter Mahan –have formed the PGA’s exclusive boy band, “Golf Boys.” Their debut single, “Oh Oh Oh” aired this week yet left me wondering why Ian Poulter-in his normal garb-wasn’t included. Regardless, you’ll enjoy our golf hotties doing their best Athlebrity moves while raising money for charity. Presenting sponsor Farmers Insurance will donate $1,000 to charitable initiatives chosen by Crane and the insurance company for every 100,000 views of the video. (Which they’ll probably get from me alone, can you say Rickie Fowler? You know which one he is ladies…)

The NBA, the State Department and Justin’s Quest

The NBA, the State Department and Justin’s Quest

The AP has just announced that ‘three current and former basketball players will be in Venezuela this week, part of a State Department “sports diplomacy” effort at a time of icy relations between the two countries. The State Department will announce that Memphis Grizzlies guard Greivis Vasquez and others are participating in the people-to-people exchange starting this Thursday. The Associated Press obtained details of the trip ahead of its official announcement. Vasquez, along with former NBA player Darvin Ham and former WNBA Player Kayte Christensen, will hold basketball clinics for kids, and meet with local sports officials. Vasquez is a Venezuela native. Venezuela’s foreign minister said last week that relations between the two countries are frozen, and that his government sees no possibility of improving them.’

While there may be no possibility of de-icing the countries, I know there is some serious inspiration behind the Athlebrities involved. By tracing the footsteps of the Grizzlies’ Greivis Vasquez, I found an amazing young boy named Justin Friedlander.

Justin and Grievis

In March 2009, Justin was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and decided to fight back in a creative way to raise funds for the National Brain Tumor Society. Justin’s Quest? Shoot a basket for every person diagnosed with a primary brain tumor each year in the United States. That’s approximately 63,000 baskets. And last year, Vasquez shot hoops with Justin. This year? Justin made his 63,000 shot with the help of Pau Gasol. Others Athlebrities who helped make Justin’s Quest a success include Darryl Dawkins and Michael Phelps. So thank you State Department…you generally lose me at ‘government’ but had me at ‘clinics for kids’.
